The Persistence Effect

October 30, 2014 By Mary Anne Trotman

ToothbrushIt’s what you do not what you say that shows what you really value.  How many of you wouldn’t dream of leaving the house without brushing your teeth – no matter how little time you have?  It shows that having healthy teeth is important to you.  You get an insight into your real priorities by looking at where you actually spend your time.

The fact that you brush every day also means you recognise that to keep healthy teeth you need to brush repeatedly and consistently.  The same is true for your marketing if you want a healthy business.

“The magic formula for professional services marketing and sales is choosing a set of simple, effective things to do and doing them consistently”, CJ Hayden, Author of GET CLIENTS NOW!  It’s what she calls the Persistence Effect.

I have set up and run my own businesses where I have had to both deliver the service and generate new business.  So I understand some of the problems that small business owners face when it comes to sales and marketing.  I know how difficult it can be to make time to market your business consistently.  I also know that it’s not always about time.  How many of these reasons for not marketing your business have passed your lips?

“I don’t know what I need to do”; “I don’t have enough prospects”; “I don’t know how to contact them”; “I am not good at networking”; “I don’t have a big enough budget”…

I am not saying that there isn’t a grain of truth in these reasons and if you are a sole entrepreneur then you do have to carry out the work, otherwise there was no point generating it in the first place.  But it is worth considering what you are and are not making time for in your business and what this tells you about your priorities.  Do you really need to spend hours, days, weeks… crafting the “perfect” website when some of that time would have been better spent on activity that drives people to viewing it?

Have you ever noticed that when you really focus on something you can get results in unexpected places?  When you start to market your business in a focused and consistent way it may seem that you gain some out-of-the-blue results.  This is the persistence effect in action.  The trick is to do something and to do it consistently.  If you carry out a few actions every day or week, then you will get results.  You may not always be able to see a direct cause and effect, but you don’t need to worry about how that works – if it just does.

With the number marketing books and courses available and the number of consultants and coaches who offer marketing solutions (yes I know I am in part describing myself!) you can be forgiven for thinking marketing must be complex, difficult, time-consuming or even some dark art.  But at its most basic it is about telling people what you do, over and over and over again.

Easy to say but not always as easy to do.  The GET CLIENTS NOW! programme combines education on marketing tools and techniques with coaching designed to address the issue of consistency and overcome any limiting beliefs that may have been holding you back.  It helps you find out what really works to market your service business and what doesn’t. Through regular coaching sessions it provides the perspective, accountability and support to help you create a plan that works for your business; plays to your strengths and most importantly gets you taking action – to benefit from the persistence effect.
